Well there is still some turmoil going on in Capricorn (that will continue on and off until the end of the year), but Mercury shifted out of Cap and into Aquarius a week ago, the Sun followed suit on Monday, and now the Moon joins them as well. The energy is shifting into Aquarius. This New Moon (4 degrees Aquarius; 1:42pm, January 24th) marks a turning point and foreshadows what’s to come, for soon enough both Saturn and Jupiter (and eventually Pluto) will be moving into Aquarius and then we will meet our future. (Saturn will dip into Aquarius briefly this spring (March 21-July 1), and then for good come December (December 17th 2020- March 7th 2023). Jupiter will move into Aquarius next December as well (December 20th, 2020 - May 13th 2021; July 29th 2021 - December 28th, 2021).)
In Capricorn, we’ve been concerned with history, society, structures and systems, power dynamics, oppression, trauma, complicity, control: with the fraught history that brought us here and the stark state of affairs we find ourselves in. Capricorn is a reality check, and can help us take care of our affairs on a material level. But after that--in Aquarius--we turn to the future. Aquarius takes the reality beheld by Capricorn and says what can we make of this? Where to from here? Aquarius is the sign of the people--the collective. And as such, this energy assists us in considering what is best for the group. What changes ought we make such that there is more equality, justice, and freedom for all?
Aquarius is innovative, future-leaning, Utopic, revolutionary, technological, experimental, scientific, disruptive, nonlinear, and freedom-loving. There is a logic to the order of the Universe: don’t we need more of this now and in the years to come? The New Moon is square its ruler, Uranus in Taurus, which amplifies the Aquarian themes, and may contribute to anxiety or a sense of unease that if we take the time to examine may relate to feelings of insecurity regarding climate change, the state of the earth, and our immediate or long-term access to food, housing, and other resources.
Uranus will be in Taurus until 2026, bringing changes to the earth and revolutionizing our relationship to earthly resources. On an inner level, we are changing our values, and considering what material resources we actually need and desire. Likely this transit signifies radical changes to financial systems, food systems, resource extraction, building materials, and building methods. It may also bring further developments in reproductive technologies. We are likely to see radically disruptive technologies which spur our changing relationship to earth. With such massive changes to the material realm (ruled by Taurus), including Earth itself, it’s bound to be a bumpy ride. But Uranus always seeks to bring us more freedom and equality. Change is good--if difficult. We are bound to feel either anxious or excited or both.
Anxiety isn’t our demon--avoiding it is. If we lean into why we are anxious--aren’t there so many good reasons? Reasons that can inspire action. Sometimes we aren’t able to make changes. We have to put up with business as usual. But we are in a time now, when, for many of us, it’s time to take a big step in a different direction. That may mean making a change in where or how we live or work, or the change may be more internal. But in a strange way, I think our anxiety may be especially useful now. What is your anxiety telling you?
At the New Moon, Mercury is approaching a sextile to Mars (exact Saturday), which is almost square to Venus (Sunday) and Neptune (Tuesday) (Venus and Neptune conjoin on Monday). Mercury brings our attention to this sequence. Venus conjunct Neptune is dreamy, romantic, and creative, but sometimes has us looking through rose-coloured glasses. Mars in square to this could show up as our actions stymied by delusion or ungrounded thought. If we can align with spiritual yet grounded vision, however, Mars can help us to move forward. What do you value? What are your ideals? How can you align your actions more with those? Take some time to enjoy the romance and poetry, and just remember that fantasy, for better or worse, is in the air.
Aquarius is community oriented. It’s about friendship, connections, networks. Aquarius knows what it means to be excluded and isolated, and also what it means to be connected and appreciated. And it knows that the only way to find true community is to be your own weird and unique self. This month, the opportunity is to move forward in collaboration with others. What can we accomplish through community that we can’t do alone? How can we pool our resources and expertise in order to overcome the challenges we face?
When alone, we are more likely to feel the panic of: What can one person do? What ought I do to make a difference? How can I affect the world in a positive way? How will we ever overcome the challenges we face? How will we manage in the changing climate? As individuals--we won’t. We won’t manage, we won’t adapt, we won’t survive, we won’t have a positive impact on the world. It’s only together that we can create change. It’s only together that we’ll get through this.
Aquarius sees each individual as an essential piece in the puzzle, an essential node in the network. Each individual with their unique interests and skills, is necessary. No one of us needs to or could know or understand everything. We each are naturally inclined to certain areas and that is perfect. Together, we create change; we adapt. The world will look very different 10 years from now. And not because one person had some grand vision; but because each person took care of their little corner. Because we all contribute in the ways we do. And when billions of people contribute in their own little ways, massive change ensues.
In its connection to networks, Aquarius is also associated with the nervous system. This month is a month to nurture your nerves with herbs, baths, rest--whatever it is that soothes you. And then get out there and connect with others who light you up. Be with the people you can be yourself around. Get weird. Dream big. Create change.
